Samsung Plans to Have 600mp Camera Sensors Soon

As written by Yongin Park, EVP, Head of Sensor Business Team, System LSI Business at Samsung, he talked about the difference between human eye capabilities and camera sensors. He mentions that the human eye resolution is said to be equivalent to a 500-megapixel sensor and in comparison, we only have 40-megapixel and 12-megapixel sensors on DSLRs and flagship devices respectively.

Samsung has been one of the then important players in the currently ongoing megapixel war in the smartphone market. It joined the battle by releasing its own 48-megapixel sensor in response to Sony’s offering but quickly started taking the lead. It went on to announce the first-ever 64-megapixel and 108-megapixel sensors for phones. But it has much bigger plans for the future of the phone cameras which have been revealed in a new official editorial post.

While one way to increase the megapixel count is to put as many pixels as possible in a sensor, it would result in sensor size getting bigger exponentially. This is the reason sensor makers decide to shrink pixel size to accommodate as many pixels as possible in limited space. Even that has its own cons as smaller pixels can result in dull photos.

The current goal of Samsung includes releasing 600-megapixel sensors but due to the aforementioned issues, the team of engineers is trying to figure out how to overcome these difficulties. But a high megapixel count is not the only thing that is on the mind of the Samsung team. Park said that sensors that can capture light wavelength beyond 450 and 750 nm range can prove to be helpful in various other fields including agriculture and medicine. It is even thinking of sensors that can detect smell and taste to change the way we see and experience things around us.
