Google has launched the Android 11 Developer Preview 1 for the Pixel phones. The latest version of Android is addressed as Android R internally and the company is expected to name it Android 11 as Google previously did by changing the way of what it used to be.
Like always, the developer previews are released first so that the developers could test the latest Android OS ahead of the stable launch which comes in August. The build comes a few weeks earlier than expected and this gives just more time for the developers to go through the test thoroughly.
The first Developer Preview is available for the Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL. Unfortunately, the Essential Phone won’t be joining the list now or even in the future as the company has ended all operations. Below, you will find the System and OTA images for Pixel phones.
Google has also shared a detailed timeline for Android 11 on its Android Developer website to let you know about the rollout. The timeline shows the Android 11 Developer Preview program will run till the final public release in Q3 2020 and the first Android 11 beta will be released over-the-air in May to early adopters who’ve enrolled in the Android Beta program. Google will release two more Developer Previews and three betas before the scheduled final release.
The second developer preview will be rolled out in March and it will be an incremental update with additional features. The third developer preview will be followed in April, which would further bring some stability in the performance of Android 11.
The second beta will be a Platform Stability milestone for Google which will be rolled out in June with final APIs and behaviors. The third, and final, beta will be a release candidate build and is expected to be rolled out in Q3 2020.
